Many parents' first question is: "why can't my child go to my dentist?" Simply put, pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. A pediatric dentist has two to three years specialty training following dental school and limits his/her practice to treating children only. Pediatric dentists are primary and specialty oral care providers for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs (AAPD).
A Board Certified Pediatric Dentist is a pediatric dentist who has exemplified excellence and understanding in the speciality of pediatric dentistry. All board certified pediatric dentists have completed a rigorous examination through the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). The ABPD is the only certifying board in the specialty of pediatric dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association and sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
